About the Book

Govind Sadashiv Ghurye (–) is a towering figure in the sphere of Sociology in India.

Variously described as ‘the father of Indian Sociology’, ‘the doyen of Indian Sociologists’ or ‘the symbol of Sociological Creativeness’, Professor Ghurye had been engaged in building up almost single handedly, the entire first generation of Indian Sociologists in post-independence period. Rightly has Professor Srinivas said ‘…nothing disguises the fact that Ghurye was a giant’.

This book is the first comprehensive attempt to analyse Ghurye’s contributions in the field of Indian Sociology, in terms of his own  substantive writings, his theoretical  premises and his vision of  Sociology in India.

The encyclopaedic range of Ghurye’s works which span over a period of fifty years have been arranged and analysed thematically. Ghurye’s own role an as institution builder in sociology has been substantially analysed.

This is a second revised edition of the book.

Ghurye biography of martin G S Ghurye was born, in a Saraswat Brahmin community [5] on 12 December , at Malvan, in present-day Maharashtra. [2] His early schooling was at the Aryan Education Society's High School, Girgaum, in Bombay, and then at Bahadur Khanji High School, Junagadh, in the princely state of Junagadh. [2].

Two new chapters have been added in this edition covering analytically, ‘Indological Foundations in the Sociology of G.S. Ghurye’ and ‘G.S. Ghurye and the Development of Institutional Sociology in India’. It is hoped that, like the previous edition, this new edition will be received well by the students and researchers in the field of Indian Sociology.
