Dave gahan children
Exclusive Interview: Kap10kurt
Kap10kurt has recently played live with and remixed for Dave Gahan. HOME caught up with the Swiss born New Yorker, for a chat on his own projects and how it was to play live with one of his heroes.
Youve been involved with the current Gahan project on several different levels.
Please take us through the different things, and tell us a little bit about how it all came about.
It all came together by Andrew Phillpott and Christian Eigner being at a Kap10kurt show in New York, when they were recording the first ideas for Hourglass. I was helping Dave on a more technical level on demos for Playing The Angel and met Andrew and Christian briefly on that tour as well.
So after the show, Andrew and Christian, or Das Schadow as they are called, and I hung out and I think they liked the show and soon after my phone rang to help them complete Hourglass.
As a self-confessed Mode fan, how was it to go on stage to perform with Gahan for the first time?
It was a blast, of course Dave is a five star performer and his personality and sense of humor is incredibly infectious.
Even during rehearsals he is there % and not just going through the motions.
It was quite inspiring! Also, the other guys in the band are premium. Andrew played a lot of the quite complicated keyboards live and triggered samples which is not easy to do and takes a lot of preparation. Christian is not a newbie of course and plays with the force of an austrian tractor. Martyn LeNoble from the Paper Monsters tour and played with Porno for Pyros and Janes Addiction.
Then there was Graham Finn, who is a NYC session player and bassist in The Glass.
Dave gahan biography monsters He first made his name in , debuting as Kap10Kurt on the essential compilation The Sound Of Young New York. His song "Die Sleeping" was an early classic of dreamy, club-ready synth pop, and it caught the attention of fans and artists around the world. He was emulating more of the synth textures and translated them onto a guitar. And I was doing mostly nasty synth bass lines, which is kinda what I do in k10k.
And how did you get into Depeche Mode originally? Was it back when you were still living in Europe?
Yes it was back in Switzerland. It was because my older brother, Erol, was a huge HiFi fanatic and spent all his money on audio equipment like top of the line Marantz Systems.
I remember he bought this monsterous 2 x Watt HiFi poweramp.
He then measured his room acoustically and even had a X on the floor marking the perfect sweet spot for stereo listening. But he kept his room locked and I was not allowed to listen to his sensitive system but I found the key eventually and started sneaking in when he was out. Thats when I started listening to Depeche. Of course, he had every button on the turntable marked and found out pretty quickly so after lots of yelling he agreed to make me a cassette copy of the record.
Your remix of Kingdom in particular have been hailed as fan favourite, and many are calling it the return of the good old-fashioned extended 12 mix.
Why did you decide to stick to this format?
Kap10kurt dave gahan biography Hourglass: Remixes is a remix album by English singer Dave Gahan. (Kap10Kurt mix) "Use You" (Maps remix) "Deeper & Deeper" (T. Raumschmiere remix extended). And why did you change your approach for the Use You mix, which is a much more drastic overhaul of the song?
The extended mix of Kingdom came about because Dave and Daniel Miller asked me to create a proper old school extended mix. But as usual, I got a tiny bit carried away and started shifting around some bass and guitar lines which is quite subtle but gave the track a bit more bounce.
Then I started chopping up Christians snare and kick and created the intro. But all in all it is a proper extended mix.
With Use You I had complete freedom and edited the vocals up to a more danceable tempo. From there I just tried to get as mean and dirty taking snippets of leftover breaths from Daves vocal and it got quite dirty.
I was actually a bit nervous when I handed it in cause maybe I took it too far but they are grown men and seemed happy with it.
You told me recently that you did another remix for Gahan.

Hourglass: Remixes is a remix album by English singer Dave Gahan. It was released by Mute Records on 11 March in North America. [1].Can you tell us which track, and when we might get to hear it? What should people expect from this new mix?
Its Love Will Leave and I just finished it three weeks ago. So with mastering and all it could be out soon, but who knows what it will be used for. Its quite grand and melancholy so its probably not a dancefloor destroyer!
Hahaha maybe a soundtrack?
With your own tour well underway shortly, are you done playing live with Gahan for now?
Hhmm Thats all up in the air still. But from what I am told its Depeche time in a few months, so it would be in early Right now I am concentrating on Kap10kurt since we just released Dangerseekers and its doing very well in the dance music world.
The blogs are giving it lotsa love so we have to go out and present it live.
As you know, I am coming to see your show. What can I expect? What is the Kap10kurt live experience all about?

And then there is me on the Roland SH strap-on synth. Its a nasty beast!
You recently released your newest single, Dangerseekers. In a time where the single has been pronounced dead, at least in a commercial sense, isnt it a bit daunting putting out a single? And on picture disc vinyl no less!
Yes, the picture disc 12 is a an odd format to release in this day and age of digital downloads, but I think there is still people like me out there that appreciate the visual aspect of music and the sonic quality of vinyl.
It has sold out within 2 weeks and is currently in repress. The other bonus is that most record stores are putting it on display since it is such a beauty.
Whats next for Kap10kurt? Is Dangerseekers leading up to a full length?
Yes, full length coming in summer ! Another single before that!
